In ancient times, watching the Sun, scientists noticed that moving among the stars, for a year, it makes one revolution in a large circle of the celestial sphere. This great circle of ancient Greeks called the ecliptic. The name has survived until today. The eclipse passes through 12 constellations, called zodiacal (from the Greek zodiakos kiklos — animal circle). The number of constellations corresponds to the number of months in a year (Figure 39); The totality of these constellations is called the zodiacal belt. In each zodiac constellation the Sun is about a month old.
Thus, the annual way of the Sun over the celestial sphere is called the ecliptic. Moving along the ecliptic, the Sun crosses the celestial equator two times (March 21 and September 23) at points called points of the spring and autumn equinox. The point of the spring equinox is in the constellation Pisces, and the point of the autumnal equinox is in the constellation Libra. These days, the Sun crosses the celestial equator, and the horizon divides it in half. Hence, the paths of the Sun above the horizon and below it are equal, that is, the same duration of day and night.
On June 22, the Sun is most distant from the equator to the north. This day is the longest day — the summer solstice. On December 22, the Sun is most remote from the equator to the south. This day is the shortest day — the day of the winter solstice.
Еще в древности, наблюдая за Солнцем, ученые заметили, что, двигаясь среди звезд, за год оно совершает один оборот по большому кругу небесной сферы. Этот большой круг древние гре­ки назвали эклиптикой. Название сохранилось до сегодняшнего дня. Эклиптика проходит через 12 созвездий, называемых зодиа­кальными (от греч. зодиакос киклос — звериный круг). Число созвездий соответствует числу месяцев в году (рис. 39); совокуп­ность этих созвездий называют зодиакальным поясом. В каждом зодиакальном созвездии Солнце находится примерно месяц.
Таким образом, годичный путь Солнца по небесной сфере называют эклиптикой. Двигаясь по эклиптике, Солнце пере­секает небесный экватор два раза (21 марта и 23 сентября) в точках, называемых точками весеннего и осеннего равноден­ствия. Точка весеннего равноденствия находится в созвездии Рыб, а точка осеннего равноденствия — в созвездии Весов. В эти дни Солнце пересекает небесный экватор, а горизонт де­лит его пополам. Значит, пути Солнца над горизонтом и под ним равны, т. е. одинакова продолжительность дня и ночи.
22 июня Солнце наиболее удалено от экватора к северу. Этот день является самым длинным днем — днем летнего солнцестоя­ния. 22 декабря Солнце наиболее удалено от экватора к югу. Этот день является самым коротким днем — днем зимнего солн­цестояния.
